K&L Notes

Cesanese is a grape native to Lazio, the region where Rome is. The Lazio region produces not one Cesanese but three, from three different grapes: Cesanese d’Affile, Cesanese Comune and Cesanese Nostrano. The important one of the bunch is the Cesanese d’Affile, the grape that goes into the two DOCs of Piglio and Affile. It has always been a difficult grape because it is very late ripening, and needed talented winemakers to coax the best from it. Warmer temperatures are allowing these varieties to reach complete phenolic ripeness, which rarely happened before. Casale della Ioria, a winery owned by Paolo Perinelli and his family, is about 45 miles southeast of Rome. This is one of those talented producers who could always coax character out of this tricky grape variety.

The 2015 Casale della Ioria Cesanese del Piglio is an exceptional example of the varietal. This wine is fermented in stainless steel and then aged in French barrique. 2015 was an exceptional year for late-ripening varieties such as Cesanese. The nose is full of vibrant wild cherry and lilac, and then on the palate it broadens into a plummy ripeness, never fat just more viscous.
