Bright orange rim, fox red in the middle. Paul told us that there is no vintage 1808 madeira. Even though 1808 was acknowledged a great Madeira vintage. This was clearly what he called 'a pretty old solera' that was only rarely topped up. Dry and treacly wine with acidity in the foreground. Very very clean. A historic relic that is still much feistier than many much, much younger madeiras. 19/20 Points (JR)
Original cork and capsule. A clear orange/amber core with gold rim (less of the green tinged) although there is a sediment that makes it look like an unstrained Chinese tea! It really has a bewitching nose: touches of honey, cinnamon, tangerine, building more mango and apricot scents with time. It is gorgeous on the palate, viscous in texture with the acidity slicing through it perfectly, just a little volatility to give it an edge, notes of maduka honey, orange-blossom, tangerine and just a hint of ginger towards the graceful finish. Beguiling. Tasted December 2008. (NM)
