Tasting Notes

The vision of Gabriëlskloof is to produce the best wines that they can: wines that reflect the complexity, richness and diversity of Gabriëlskloof's unique terroir. They strive to do this in the most environmentally friendly way possible, showing respect for their region's biodiversity at all times. Winery tasting note: "Rosebud is the little darling of our Estate Range. It is a blended rosé style wine, made with Syrah (58%) and Viognier (42%), both from Gabriëlskloof vines, offering a deliciously moreish perfume thanks to the Viognier, with nice grippy tannins afforded by the Syrah. In the glass flavours of white melon, fragrant rose and hints of strawberry and papaya are prominent, with spicy red fruit in the background. Complex, but infinitely drinkable, the 2016 Rosebud will delight and surprise. Gabriëlskloof Winery is in the Bot River ward, where prevailing southerly winds from the nearby Atlantic Ocean create a mesoclimate ideally suited to low-yielding premium vineyards."

This is more than just a simple rose at a great price. It delivers everything that you would expect, it is crisp and refreshing with muted citrus, stone fruits, berries and hint of mineral. But this is something else going on here, it is on the nose and you cannot quite pin it down, it is fantastic. A delicious refreshing everyday wine that invites you to come back again and again while your trying to put your finger on what that on thing is. A willow o' the wisp wine.

It is rare that this old wine guy is stumped for descriptors, and I get the chance to see a new profile expressed in the glass. The group I was tasting with was mesmerized and oddly silent as we swirled, sniffed and swirled again with same furrowed brows. We all grasped for ways to describe the illusive yet tantalizing side of this wine. Initially this coral pink wine resembled Sancerre under your nose with a dry forest floor, woodsy element. A touch of wild strawberry barely caressed the bouquet to let you know it was rose, but there was something else no one could describe as it was wholly unique to this glass. We credited the ancient soils of Africa washed down and blended together by the Bot River as the answer to this pleasing aromatic mystery. On the palate the wine was round and mouth filling with good acid for balance. A muted sense of bing-cherry and field herbs built with time but the mystery aroma persisted and intrigued us as it laughed at our ineptitude. Bot River 1, Wine nerds 0… Syrah (58%) and Viognier (42%).
