K&L Notes

Cottanera's charming Sicilia wines from Mt Etna are always a K&L favorite. The Barbazzale Rosso is primarily made of Nerello Mascalese with a small amount of Nerello Cappuccio. The winery describes the wine as, "vibrant ruby red, perfect for first-time wine drinkers. Delightful scents of raspberry and blackberry, wild flowers interwoven with light mineral scents. Very pleasant freshness on the palate, with a fresh tasting hint of acid."

A great introduction to the deliciousness of Etna Rosso. Dark ripe fruit with a touch of the classic Etna ashiness. Fine tannins give the wine just enough grip to balance the ripe dark fruit. Tasty weeknight red.

This is a very fruit forward, soft and easily approachable wine. A touch of spice at the end gives it a lot of character and lasting zest. Very food friendly!

Cottanera's "Barbazzale" is a wonderful entry into the world of Mt Etna red wines and although it's challenging to find excellent ones under $20, they've been ahead of the curve for many years. The wine is aged mostly in cement tanks while a smaller amount is housed in small French barrels which gives it a bit more depth, polish and spicing. It's a very versatile red that will pair well with a variety of favorites including pizza, pasta, meats and hearty fare.

One of my favorite things about Etna Rossos are their savory, dried herb character. The Conttanera is filled with aromatics and flavors of dried thyme, sage, and eucalyptus encompassed in a full bodied, high acid wine. The stony structure sings praises to the vines volcanic soils while ripe fruit from the warm climate gives the wine a silky texture. Holiday parties filled with herb & cheese crostini would be a magical pairing!

Mount Etna is an active volcano found on the island of Sicily and is famous for producing wines of distinction. This a terrific little bottle of wine that expresses the terroir of Mount Etna perfectly. Crisp blackberries and raspberries are harmoniously wrapped with fresh flowers and soft velvety tannin. The acid is bright and delightful and the rocky volcanic soils add texture and chalky minerality. Serve this with pesto dishes, roasted lamb or meaty mushrooms and escape to the Mediterranean. Saluti!

The nose of this wine is heady, full of wild aromatics with bits of chocolate and hints of green olive that give the wine an intense aromatic character. On the palate the wine shows more of its volcanic origins, a vibrant mineral focus that gives a linear spirit to the wine that skewers the broad, richly textured mid-palate. On the mid-palate you see more of the chocolate, plummy richness, then anise, leather and bits of pepper emerge slowly. The finish shows a bit of ethereal tannin on its outside borders and the fine-grained nature of its tannin. Drag out your cookbook (it’s on Google…right?) and find the recipe for Pasta alla Norma, the perfect Sicilian counterpart for this wine. I love the wines from Etna and I think this is an excellent introduction to the category. If you’re unfamiliar with the wines, I find that Etna Rosso is a bit like a stylistic cross between Nebbiolo and red Burgundy, not so much in flavor but in texture and balance. Give it a try, and use a Burgundy glass.
    Drink from 2017 to 2020
