K&L Notes

The Desmeures family of Domaine des Remizières are fourth-generation winemakers who originally sold grapes to the local cooperative. After completing their winery in 1974, the family began production at their new property. The estate is now managed by Phillipe Desmeures, his daughter, Emilie, and son, Christophe. They have expanded to 30 hectares with vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Hermitage. Emilie now oversees the winemaking, with her brother Christophe tending to the vineyards. We were excited to add them to our lineup of Direct Imports last year. The basic Crozes-Hermitage comes from the hills of Crozes, on clay-limestone soils with bits of galets (stones) scattered throughout the vineyards. They use 100% destemmed Syrah grapes, then age in large oak casks. About as close to a pure expression of Syrah one could hope to find from this often-overlooked wine region. Praise for the producer from Wine Advocate: "One of my favorite Crozes-Hermitage estates is the Domaine des Rémizières...This estate needs to be on every reader’s short list." (JD, 12/2015)

A textbook, classic French Syrah, this northern Rhone wine delivers intensity of fruit with loads of minerality as well. Beautiful violet color with lifted aromatic notes of black currants, blackberry and earth. There is a lightness to this wine that I find very attractive.

I adored – and personally purchased many bottles – of the delicious, smoky 2015 Domaine des Remizières Crozes-Hermitage, and wasn’t sure if the new vintage would live up to expectations. I am happy to report this vibrant entry-level Northern Rhône overdelivers. Subtly floral on the nose with notes of violet, dark berry fruit, and a spicy finish, the 2016 is both sophisticated and approachable, leaner than the ripe 2015 but just as complex. Drink now and impress your Syrah-loving friends.

A super fresh, bright Crozes with an awesomely lively core of wild fruit, pepper and a hit of the bright minerality that is such a distinctive calling card for the region. The first inhale is full of that terroir--wet clay and limestone, morning dew and fresh herbs. On the palate, dark, lightly tart fruit and more fragrant herbs-- sweet sage and lavender, with some woody earth on the finish owing to the twelve months the wine spends in large oak foudres. A delicious Crozes that out-preforms its price point. Approachable and pleasing now, but could certainly be squirreled away for a few years for a bit more maturation.

A great Northern Rhône Syrah that delivers tremendous value. Aromas of dark fruits, pepper, violets, and baked earth. On the palate, rich, unctuous currants and blackberries move towards tart black cherry, soy sauce, and mineral notes. A marked spice note on the finish as well. While the fruit quality is ripe, there is a contrast against this with a pleasant freshness and silky tannin structure. This would be a nice choice with various food options, especially roasts. Fantastic quality with respect to the under-$20 price point

It's hard to find this quality of Syrah for this price anywhere in the world let alone the Rhone Valley. The 2015 of the Remizieres Crozes was a breakthrough wine for us as it gave our clients access to the Northern Rhone for a very reasonable price. No doubt it was special as people came back for more, again and again. It became one of our best selling northern Rhone wines of all time. And from a small estate producer?? But that's what our Direct Import program helps us do - bring you quality wines at great price points. So how does the 2016 measure up? Beyond favorable, it is brighter and more overt than the 2015 which makes it so appealing now. It has great acidity and smoother tannins, sweet black plum fruit and savory spices. The 16 is not as concentrated, as 2015 was a warmer vintage overall, but it is fleshy, vibrant and good to go. I am thrilled we were able to establish this direct relationship with Remizieres. They have continued to wow us at all levels of their production from this humble little red, to their sultry whites to their deeply powerful Hermitage.

This is a tremendous follow-up to the epic Remizieres 2015 Crozes-Hermitage we offered last year. If what we as the staff buy at K&L is any indication of quality, I bought more of Remizieres Crozes-Hermitage than any other wine, ever. Currently, I’m on track to beat that with the 2016. For lovers of Syrah, this is an absolute must-buy. Where you going to find a $16 Syrah anywhere that has the focus on quality and the hand-made production you find here? It’s upfront and fruity with all of that black pepper and spice goodness that you’re looking for, along with zesty acid and black fruits. It’s broad and full without going over the top, and retains that balance you’re only going to find in the northern Rhone. I can’t say enough about the staggering quality for the price of this wine.

The newest vintage of this direct import was decidedly young upon its arrival at K&L. But with a couple months to rest in the bottle, it has relaxed into a wine perfectly representative of everything that makes me such a nerd for Northern Rhone Syrah. The woodsy cedar and sawdust on the nose, accompanied by a dusting of white and black pepper, are folded into the layers of brambly raspberry, blueberry, red currants, roasted herbs, violets, and subtle dark cocoa. Medium-bodied with extremely comfortable, seamless acidity, this is versatile, food-friendly, and remarkably affordable for Crozes-Hermitage.

This delicious bargain Syrah seems to be getting a bit richer with each new vintage yet retains the white pepper and violet aromas as well as the palate coating but fresh blue and black fruits. This is an all around great N. Rhone red that over delivers.
