A powerhouse with Grand Cru-like poise, this edition has plenty of charm. Aromas of red cherries, nori, forest wood and herbs, as well as a stony edge. The palate has a smooth surface layer of fine, plush tannins across a deeper inner core and a long serve of fresh, ripe red berry and cherry fruit. A magnificent, long and precise finish. A seamless wine. Drink now and for some years to come.
Deep ruby-red colour, with slight garnet hues on edge. This has an array of complex and savoury fruit aromas of dark-red berry fruit along with whole bunch interest on the nose. Rich and luscious on palate, quite complex with layers of dried herbs and stalks to the savoury fruit flavours. This is very well balanced by the tannin textures and structural grip. This has plenty of detail and interest with the framework. Just so complex already.
Earthy and floral, the 2016 Block 5 Pinot Noir smells like dusty rose petals sprinkled over a bed of plummy fruit. Cola notes add a savory character on the palate, which is medium to full-bodied but supple and elegant. The finish firms up a bit, so try to keep your hands off it for the next couple of years and then drink it over the next decade. (JC)
