It's always a pleasure to taste through a set of Pinot Noir as delicious, well made and iconic as those from Felton Road. Calvert shows balanced red fruit flavors, terrific presence and an overall balance that maybe makes it the front runner of these 2016 bottlings. At least it did before moving on to the Cornish Point. It's tough to pick a favorite in this strong set of Pinot Noirs, a testament to the quality of work that Felton Road is doing. Highly recommended Pinot Noir.

The Calvert is always my favorite from Felton, but often it feels a bit shut down when we taste it young. Not so with this new vintage which was extremely expressive although obviously in the very beginning stages of what will be an extremely intriguing life lasting at least 10+ years here. This is top tier Pinot for $40 and while I hesitate to compare it to Burgundy since it really exists as a singular expression of the best Otago has to offer, I think its representative of the commitment to quality that the best producers of the finest burgundy put into their wine. The nose starts with shrubby black growing growing on some craggly limestone cliff. Dark and brooding but with tons of nuance. Subtle hints of flinty fireworks exploding in the distance. On the palate, it's powerful structure is balanced by deep red fruit, wild leafy herbaceous quality and a big soft tannin. An absolute UNIT!

Full of a savory nose of cherry, mint and violet tones, the Calvert is on point with its purity and suave structure. Drinking like a Pommard with a full palate and lusty earthy tones this has great structure and has immediate appeal. An even better wine with just a few years down awaits you.

Viticulture and vinification at Felton Road stay pretty consistent for all their wines offering Biodynamic viticulture, gravity fed pressings and well executed oak use. The Calvert Pinot Noir is an elegant wine aged 17 months with expressive floral notes and initial toasty notes that are reminiscent of Thanksgiving around the fireplace. Nice delicate cinnamon, cloves, ripe, black cherries and violets. The aromatics translate very nicely onto the palate and are very similar. Spiced cherries with well-balanced oak/toast. This wine is no joke and is sure to be an Autumn favorite. The Felton Road Pinot Noirs offer up good complexity and value and are surprisingly approachable.

Always the most coiled and dense of Felton's Pinots but the one that is most sure to provide a decade plus of drinking pleasure. Earthy, dark fruit, wild herbs, thyme and sage. A lovely bramble quality combining juicy, ripe, berry fruits and wild hedgerow notes. Lovely balance of fruit and savory. The tannis are nicely managed but this wine clearly will continue to unfurl and become even more impressive with more years in the bottle.

The Felton Road "Calvert" displays beautiful, unique characteristics that set it apart from the others offered by the winery. Spice and strength dominate this one, with savory characters edging over fruity ones. The 25% whole cluster is definitely felt in the mouthfeel, but the wine is still light bodied and elegant. Not as deep and dark fruited as the Cornish Point, this one is more precise and punchy. It's exciting to see such a range of offerings from Felton Road, all quite different from the others, yet all incredibly delicious and sophisticated.
