Pale gold-tinged straw-yellow. Rather delicate aromas of white stone fruits, gin, iris and flint; you can smell the volcanic ash here. Racy, minerally and fresh, with harmonious acidity providing wonderful clarity and cut to the pristine apple, pear and iodine flavors. Finishes with lingering floral perfume and a zippy saline nuance, along with strong repeating notes of iodine and rocks; this really tastes of flint. This very pure, high-acid wine (typical of the vintage) is still very closed and reticent, but will develop and age splendidly. It's also a more restrained and less forceful Zind-Humbrecht wine than usual, with 13% alcohol, 4 g/l r.s. and 6.4 g/l acidity. (ID) 94+
Medium yellow with a green tinge. Very ripe, complex nose showcases the smoky, flinty, minerally Rangen terroir, with hints of pineapple and lees adding nuance; more rocks than fruit here. Dense, silky and wonderfully tactile but quite dry, with dominant flavors of stone and iodine. Finishes uncompromisingly dry, with superb building dusty length and late notes of smoke and stone fruits. This got better and better in the recorked bottle. (ST) 94+
The crackling acidity is matched in intensity by the pronounced tea rose note that wafts through this vibrant white. Peach and papaya flavors play off smoke and white pepper notes, lingering on the long, mouthwatering finish. This is delicious, and each sip brings you back for another. Drink now through 2030. 600 cases made. (AN)
