K&L Notes

A pretty perfume of raspberries and mulberries with a hint of pomegranate and tarragon. The palate delivers bright red berry fruits with a soft and silky mid-palate and a finish of elegant and juicy tannins. *Biodynamic, Organic*

Beautifully balanced wine! I am always a little shy of Australian Rhone blends, but there is no over-oaked, sweet style here. This is as elegant as they come. What really shines through is the classic red plum notes of Grenache, underscored by the light spice and tangy savory element from the Syrah. I'd highly recommend this wine for those looking for a new example of Australian red blends, or for those just looking for a new favorite versatile red blend.

David Paxton, owner of the Paxton Winery not only believes in the uniqueness of his terroir, he has wants his vineyards to be full of life! “I’m sure biologically active soils provide flavor at lower alcohol levels” he told the press. Mr. Paxton’s biodynamic framing practices promote diverse life on his land by eliminating herbicides and pesticides, encouraging assorted vegetation among the vines and he also looks to nature first for answers when issues arise. Paxton is leading the way in Australia as its largest winery currently observing biodynamics and organic practices on its 80 hectares. Even at a modest $16.99 it is possible to have a robust red blend that is earth friendly, expertly crafted to have modest alcohol and gets rave reviews! The bouquet is not loud like some higher alcohol wines can be but more nuanced and even tempered. On the nose the AAA shows black fruit and dry bramble at first take. Cassis, eucalyptus, and anise build in the glass with more vigorous swirling and now the wine really starts to come to life. The palate is full and giving without being flabby (again modest alcohol helps). A lifted mid palate and the medium tannins allow all of the flavors hinted at on the nose to shine right through for a harmony of fruit, earthiness, and mint. Tasty on its own but with a meal it could really sing.

What an incredible value for a wine with so much punch and that has had so much effort put into making it. McLaren Vale sits along the coast of South Austrlia, and the terroir of this location shines through in this wine. It is bright and powerful, with incredibly engaging fruit and mineral character. This has all the hallmarks of an Aussie Shiraz, but with freshness and originality to boot. It can be hard to maintain an organic/biodynamic standard when wineries around you don't follow suit, but Paxton has stuck to its guns and its wines have come out all the better for it.
    Top Value!

This is and it isn't what you would expect from an Australian Shiraz blend. It has the fruit, plenty of dark cherry and plums but it has a coolness and focus with modest spice and a muted floral note. Super fine tannins, thank you Grenache, and good acidity move the dark, lightly peppered, fruit on the palate giving it a more European feel. The Syrah component reads almost like a great Crozes. Purity and complexity, you taste the attention to detail. This is a wine that will appeal to any drinker, whether your old world or new in your drinking preference.

Every once in a while there's a buzz around the shop for a particular producer - folks that try dozens of wines a day will make sure their colleague took the time to taste a certain wine. Such is the case for Paxton's 2015 AAA. It shows great purity and freshness, refined texture, and is a very graceful rendition of a Grenache and Syrah blend. Those who adore cool-climate Syrah or elegant CdP will find a lot to love, while those looking for a top under-$20 pick will be thrilled with this gem.

An absolutely delightful wine from a lovely Biodynamic winery. The Paxton AAA Shiraz/Grenache blend shows lifted dark fruit as well as red berry on the nose with hints of spice. There is a surprising amount of complexity here with layers of berry, floral, spice and oak tannin. While the Shiraz certainly adds structure this is not a big heavy wine, rather it leans into a medium fresh body with acid to help move it along to the finish.
