Hand-picked, whole berries and whole bunches small batch open-fermented, larger concrete fermenters at the original winery also included for extended maceration on skins for 2 weeks, matured for 19 months in French oak (27% new). Both bouquet and medium-bodied palate offer a tapestry of black fruits, spices and black pepper, tannins woven through the succulent, juicy black fruits, French oak there or thereabouts, and fine lingering tannins.
Bright violet. Potent, mineral-accented dark berry, cola and licorice scents are complemented by hints of allspice, mocha and candied flowers. Fleshy and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated cassis, cherry-vanilla and violet pastille flavors that are underscored by a vein of smoky minerality. Displays excellent depth and energy and shows impressive focus on the long, sweet finish, which is framed by smooth, harmonious tannins. (JR)
Ben Haines blends this wine from vines averaging 25 years old, younger than those that contribute to his Langi (also recommended here). The granite soils at this estate produce a vibrant style of Shiraz, its soft and generous strawberry-scented fruit cushioning the tannins, the sweet richness of that fruit lasting on cool earthiness. Decant it for braised lamb.
