Tasting Notes

As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine; and for ageing, barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines. And what fruit! This crianza is a potpouri of mixed berries, with great purity and cut that provides a lovely contrast to the spiciness and oak nuances. Casa Juan's wines are somehow spicy and very drinkable, yet structured and fresh in a way few classic Riojas are. 2014 as a vintage brings great structure and heft, with a depth of flavor and build which suggests some ageability. All estate fruit, hand-harvested and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand-sewn wine with the purity, texture and elegance to prove it. New vintage, still one of the best deals at K&L. A touch bigger and darker than previous offerings. Dark fruits, spice, herbs and earth with enough tannins and acid to give the wine structure and drive. Buy it buy the case, delicious now and it will age terrifically (I had a '01 recently and it was delicious).

I am always so excited to try a new vintage of Lesmos Crianza. The 2014 vintage absolutely exceeded my expectations. After I tried it I wanted to make sure that all of my colleagues at K&L had the chance to try and experience this wine. This Rioja is so incredibly impressive for such a low price. Everytime I drink wines from this producer, I think about how fortunate I am that I found Senor De Lesmos!

Vintage after vintage, this is consistently one of the best buys in the store. This is a fuller bodied style of Crianza, with rich dark fruit and plenty of oak spice, but all incredibly balanced and well-made, with a structure to stand up to the strength of the flavors. If you are looking for a classic Rioja, or perhaps just in the market for a new weekday red, I couldn't recommend this highly enough

Another fantastic bottling from our friends at Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos. Initial aromas reveal a lovely rustic charm to the wine, with a bouquet of dried herbs and dusty earth. Aromas of cherries and berries also come through as well. On the palate, flavors of dried fruits like dark cherry and berry intermingle with notes of earthy minerality. The wine's lively acidity lends it as an obvious choice for various food pairing applications. A great example of a Crianza Rioja, and a good value as well for being under $15.

A classic, quite dry, savory expression of Crianza Rioja, the 2014 Lesmos opens with desiccated dark fruit and umami notes, with elegant wafts of anise. The palate is light and spice-dominated, with loads of dark, tart plum, cassis, a touch of iodine, and saline minerality. Though this cellar-worthy wine may need to breathe a bit, it does show nicely now. I would love to try it with grilled octopus!
