Here too there is prominent wood influence framing the slightly higher-toned and marginally more complex aromas of red currant and blackberry fruits aromas that evidence notes of violet and plum. I very much like the sense of precision to the impressively rich and powerful full-bodied flavors that offer good volume and real drive on the sleekly muscled and firmly structured finish where the supporting tannins are slightly finer.
The 2015 Morey Saint Denis 1Er Cru les Millandes includes 55% whole bunch fruit and 35% new oak. This might actually be the only cuvée from the domaine that shows some of the warmth of the growing season, with hints of date and fig infusing the black fruit. Attractive for sure, though the Gevreys have more class. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent black fruit, sweet and slightly candied in the mouth with a gentle grip, I just find the finish a little static at the moment. Perhaps it will gain more tension once in bottle. There is nothing that gives me more pleasure than seeing a winemaker, a domaine, ratchet up the quality a few notches—and that is undoubtedly the case here with Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini. A decade ago their wines were adequate, but not really fulfilling their full potential. However, Florence Heresztyn and her husband Simon Mazzini are realizing their vision to produce the best wines possible from their holdings. Of course, much of that work has been done where it matters, among the vines whereby half are now tended biodynamically. It's not that they have adopted Rudolf Steiner's tenets that I personally regard as the headline, rather that it is indicative of a winemaker that really, really cares. You just cannot be biodynamic without dedicating yourself 100% and that attention to detail must be applied throughout the entire winemaking process. The domaine intends to apply for certification from 2016.
