Tasting Notes

Many European vineyards have a long history of being connected to monastic traditions. Remarkably, Abbazia di Novacella in Italy's Isarco River Valley still carries on similar traditions today. The abbey was originally founded by the Augustinian Order of Canons Regular in 1142! To this day the monks continue to support themselves by farming vegetables and fruits, including grapes for winemaking. While humble in some regards, including the price, the wines of Abbazia di Novacella have an acclaimed international reputation, and in 2009 the enologist Celestino Lucin was named Winemaker of the Year in Gambero Rosso, Italy's premier wine and food guide. The Pinot Grigio is both classic and sophisticated. The majority is fermented in stainless steel, but 1/3 is fermented and rests in neutral oak casks adding depth and texture to what is Italy's time-honored, refreshing white wine.

Italy produces an ocean of Pinot Grigio and I’ll have to say most of it is not very exciting, this wine however is STUNNING! The 2016 vintage is one of Italy’s best. The nose is wow, full of a blend of complex stone fruit and waves of Alpine flowers. On the palate this wine has everything, richness, incredible balance and a long, long finish, it truly out does the entire category.
