The 2010 Mazoyères-Chambertin boasts a haunting, impossibly elegant bouquet. Hints of dark cherry, espresso, licorice and spice develop in the glass, adding considerable depth but no weight whatsoever. The Mazoyères remains light on its feet and impeccably refined. Sweet, candied notes resonate on the finish. Ultimately the Mazoyères is all about textural finesse, and there is no shortage of that here. (AG)
The 2010 Mazoyères-Chambertin from Domaine Taupenot-Merme is also outstanding, offering up a very deep and refined bouquet (particularly for young Mazoyères) of sweet dark berries, grilled meat, a touch of eucalyptus, espresso, currant leaf, woodsmoke and a gentle base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and quite reserved, with a rock solid core of fruit, excellent focus and balance, ripe tannins and outstanding length and grip on the poised and still quite primary finish. One can easily appreciate how different the personalities are of this and the Charmes, and it is quite sensible to not blend the two wines. A dynamite, young Mazoyères-Chambertin. (Drink between 2022-2075)
0.86 ha. Dark crimson. Very majestic nose. Not simple sweetness but just lovely density and concentration but also great balance. Dances and shows no excess of anything. Very sweet but also very firm. But not tough or drying in any way despite the obvious register of tannins here. Bravissimo! 19/20
