World-famous winery headed by Mariano García (30 years as technical director at Vega Sicilia) and Javier Zaccagnini. 100% Tempanillo, 20 months in French and American oak. 200,000 bottles produced. Very well made, palpable clean oak dominating the nose, lots of intense sweet black fruits, pencil lead, cloves, nutmeg and touch of mint. Very intense but a slightly warm palate with lots of ripe but silky tannins. New-wave Ribera style with intense structure but still very enjoyable today. 17.5/20 points. Drink 2014-2025. (FC)
2011 Aalto is the cuvee produced with Tempranillo grapes from nine villages across Ribera del Duero, some in Valladolid and the majority in Burgos. It was fermented with indigenous yeasts and was aged for 20 months in 50% new barrels and 50% used ones. Most of the oak is from France, but 15% of the barriques are made of American wood. The wine shows the house style of ripe, exuberant and well-oaked reds, with some lactic hints and surprisingly, fresh red fruit intermixed with the aromas of riper, darker fruit and plenty of spicy oak, developing pine needle-like notes with time in the glass, and later, ripe peach. The palate is medium to full-bodied with abundant, fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins. It shows good balance and moderate acidity ending with some lactic flavors. (LG)
Opaque ruby. Assertive aromas of blackberry, bitter cherry, spicecake and floral pastilles. Sweet and expansive on entry, then tighter in the middle, with an alluringly perfumed quality to the dark berry, cherry-cola and vanilla flavors. Finishes sappy and long, with fine-grained tannins adding shape and grip. (JR)
