This is a sophisticated, mineral-clad chardonnay etched with the attributes of a far more expensive offering. There is a hint of stone fruit, oatmeal and nougat from lees handling, and a brushstroke of vanilla across the finish, suggesting a modicum of oak in support. Mid-weighted, energetic and highly drinkable.
After making wine in Yarra Valley for more than 20 years, Rob Dolan established his own label with the purchase of Hardys’ Yarra Burn winery in 2011. He blends this chardonnay from vineyards in Upper Yarra, Coldstream and Yarra Glen. It shows the exceptional quality of the vintage in tight flavors of grapefruit and lemon zest over a broader textural richness. Give it time to open up and it gains freshness along with tart grape-skin savor.
Light bright gold. Fresh pear, melon, peach pit and jasmine on the perfumed, mineral-accented nose. Fleshy and dry, offering juicy orchard and pit fruit flavors braced by a suggestion of bitter lemon pith. Shows very good clarity and spicy lift on the finish, which hangs on with strong, floral tenacity. (JR)
