Tasting Notes

Winemaker's notes: "A dwindling patchwork of densely planted, very old vineyards perseveres in this balmy stretch of the Sacramento River Delta. Its deep sands have protected these ungrafted roots from a century of the ravages of phylloxera, though the threat from above of new housing developments persists. True to our mission of producing wines that give pleasure, revitalize, and revive, our bottling takes Mourvedre in a less-traveled direction. Rather than scaling it up, we exercised a lighter hand with fewer punchdowns and fairly short macerations followed by elevage in neutral puncheons and barriques for a year to produce an elegant, aromatic, yet persistent Mourvedre."

The sandy soil of the Sacramento River Delta in which this vineyard grows has inhibited any phylloxera infection over the years. This has permitted the vines to remain on their original roots, which are now over 100 years old. A lighter hand is used in making this wine and aging is done only in neutral oak, so as to not overwhelm the delicate flavors.
