Exotic red cherry fruit on the outside, tightly wound savoury liquorice tannins within. A winning mix.
The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is very beautiful in this vintage. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, mint and licorice take shape as the wine opens up in the glass. This is an especially voluminous wine endowed with tons of richness and nuance. A finessed, seamless finish laced with sweet hints of tobacco and wild flowers rounds things out in style. This is a terrific showing. Lisini gave the Brunello three years in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. (RP)
Dark cherries, plums, tobacco, incense and savory herbs flesh out on a big, broad-shouldered frame in the 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. Anise, rosemary and cedar notes appear later, but only reluctantly. There is plenty of promise on the 2007, but readers will have to be patient, as the early appeal of the vintage is nowhere to be found in this powerful, brooding Riserva. With further time in the glass, the wine begins to open, giving some sense of what the future holds. This is a striking wine from Lisini. (AG) 94+
Bright and floral, with very pretty aromas of fruit too. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and fine tannins. I like the minerality to this. Long and caressing. Better in 2014. Consistently outstanding.
Stands out for its complexity and length, showcasing cherry liqueur, blackberry preserves, root beer, dried ginger and Spanish cedar. There's an exotic Asian quality to this Brunello that adds interest. Solid, shapely and velvety in the mouth.
Medium red. Cherry, rose petal and a hint of leather on the vibrant nose. Sweet, pliant and fine-grained; less meaty and more floral in the mouth than on the nose. Not yet especially complex but lush and seamless, with an almost glyceral richness to the deep raspberry and cherry fruit. Finishes very long, with sweet, suave tannins. (ST) 92+
Very fresh, boasting cherry, plum, tobacco and wild herb aromas and flavors. There's not a lot of concentration, but this is fluid and persistent, with an aftertaste of tea and tobacco. Best from 2013 through 2022. (BS)
Mid crimson just beginning to open up. Sweet liquorice and herb liqueur. Full bodied but with low-key fruit. Bit drying on the finish. (WS)
Polished with the sweetness of new oak, this is soft and super ripe in its fruit flavors, a finely made, rich style of brunello. For steak.
