If you've read any of my staff reviews on California Cabernet selections at K&L, you'll notice a constant theme: the supremacy of mountain fruit. There's a big difference between what's grown on the hot valley floor and what's allowed to ripen more slowly on the slopes of the various ranges. This 2014 Mt. Brave expression comes from the hillsides of Mount Veeder and --MAN OH MAN-- can you taste the difference in this baby! This is a gritty, chewy, mouthful of thick mountain fruit, absolutely brimming with blackberry, smoke, savory herbs, and concentrated Cabernet goodness. This is a showstopper wine, pure and simple. It tastes far more expensive than it actually is, but you don't have to tell anyone what you really paid.

Mt. Brave Mt. Veeder Cabernet comes to us from winemaker Chris Carpenter, who had great success as winemaker at Lokoya and Cardinale. As a result of Carpenter's expertise and the magnificent high elevation vineyard site, this wine is a cellar-worthy expression of Mount Veeder Cabernet that rivals wines twice the price. With aromas of cassis, fresh mint, delicate allspice, violet and rose petal, and a palate sustained by a relentless, rocky minerality trailed by graphite, this is a powerhouse.

It can be difficult to find high quality Mt Veeder Cabernet that is both delicious and affordable. That being said, Mt. Brave's Cabernet from this famous Napa sub-appellation is stunning and we have it at a price that's much less than other wines from the area. Beautiful aromatics of dark fruits and graphite are shown with a juicy, rich mouthfeel that is nicely balanced with acidity and tannin. Hold on to this for at least a few years and I'm sure it'll evolve beautifully!

One of the most concentrated, powerful and structured boutique Napa Cabs that has passed my lips this year. This has the inky, ultra concentrated, polished feel that often accompanies wines with a price tag of 5 to 10 times this price point. Winemaker Chris Carpenter of Lokoya / Cardinale fame is crafting this wine that tastes like its costs waaaayyyyyy more than it does. I love that this Mt. Veeder fruit has power and richness but also maintains beautiful varietal structure and a gravelly minerality that is lost in so many over-ripe renditions Napa Cabernet these days. No expense spared on the slick oak that rounds out the experience. Really special mountain Cabernet for an almost everyday price point.
