K&L Notes

One of the great producers of Ventoux, Chateau Pesquie has been under the watchful eye of consumers and critics alike with their forward drinking yet complex wines. The Terrasses is the flagship and always over delivers with its blend of Grenache and Syrah

The Pesquie Ventoux is another candidate for best $10 red in the store. It has all the friendly, and approachable elements you’d look for in a Grenache/Syrah blend, but lighter and more lifted than the power-reds found Roussillon. There’s plenty of bright fruit and a hint of sweetness along with soft texture. There is plenty of vivid acid, and along with charcoal and savory tones on the palate. This is a bright, and wonderful table wine that is totally approachable, and sure to pair fantastically with your next meal.

At a time when my tasting list is packed with the fruit-driven reds of the 2015 vintage, it is a welcome change to enjoy the subdued nature of this 2014. But don't think this has little to offer - there is much here to enjoy. The fruit is more dark cherry than rich berry, and a profile of pepper and wild herb is prominent, but not overpowering. Overall this is just an absolutely delicious, smooth-drinking wine that retains its composure but continues to titillate your palate with every sip.

Every time I taste the Terrasses from Pesquie, I think, what a delicous wine and then I remember the price and think how can they do this! All from their estate in the upper reaches of Ventoux in the foothills of the Rhone's highest peak, this altitude lends intensity and balance to their wines. Intensity from the long daylight hours and balance from the cool and windy nights that keep the wines from getting over ripe. The Terrasses delivers some pretty expressive fruit and the beauty of this vintage is the softer more open structure that it offers. Lovely flavors of fig paste, blueberries and cardamom spices engulf the nose. The palate finishes with soft Maraska cherry fruit and a light peppery spices. The supplier ran a little long on inventory so we snapped up the last of the vintage for a little deeper deal, which we are passing on to you. This is a serious little wine that always goes above and beyond in its ability to charm and invigorate.

Dare I say 'Steal of the century'? But seriously though, for 10 bucks, I don't think you'll find a Rhone blend that tastes this good. This was a second bottle for me after I had a bottle of champagne in a hot tub (while that sounds awesome on paper, the hangover I had the next day wasn't) and during that time, I enjoyed everything about the Terrasses Ventoux. The notes of peppery spices on the palate paired really well with a sun dried tomato pesto pasta I had made earlier. Definitely a perfect table wine and a crowd pleaser.
