Moderately saturated medium red. Rather cool, minerally aromas of blackberry, blueberry, creme de cassis and licorice. Silky on entry, then thick with fruit, but fresh acidity for the year gives it a linear, youthfully taut character today. The most consistent and longest 2009 to this point, finishing with serious but fine tannins, primary black fruit flavors and excellent length. This very fresh Volnay caught my attention from barrel a year ago and is at least as impressive in bottle. (ST)
Deep in both color and flavor, this wine contrasts the cool of an earthen cellar and the warmth of the sun on the vines. Herbal notes of bay and oregano add dimension to the red fruit, while earthy notes of mushrooms add resonance. Cellar this two to three years to relieve some of the tension in the tannins.
