K&L Notes

Though one of the oldest Rioja bodegas, dating back to the mid-19th century, Marqués de Murrieta is not resting on its laurels. They continue to produce excellent wines big hits with their customers and critics alike. They farm all their own grapes on their large, contiguous vineyard just outside of Logrono, which boasts old vines, a variety of terroir from chalky clay to very stony parcels, and a climate that particularly favors not only Tempranillo but some of the region's finest Mazuelo.

While 2013 was not easy, for those in Rioja who have serious acreage, an experienced team and the ability to select, there were some incredibly solid wines that were made. Indeed, I have had some great Rioja´s from this vintage. True to the year, this bottling has a a slightly darker pitch to the fruit and a slightly firmer overall feel, without any hard edges. The flavor development is impressive considering its age, with all of the sweetly spicy and savory notes we love in Rioja unfurling in this delicious Reserva bottling. For the price, Marqués de Murrieta continues to be one of our best Rioja´s in stock, and from one of the most consistent leaders in quality and value from the region. Highly recommended!

Even Though 2013 was a troublesome vintage Marques De Murrieta still scored 92 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate! The wine is Predominantly Tempranillo, with of Graciano, Mazuelo, and Garnacha sprinkled in. Sweet black cherry, red raspberry, a nice amount of soft spice and leather on the nose. The palate offered a hint of savoriness, dried cherry, and ripe red plum. The oak is well integrated, the acidity is mouthwatering and fresh, and the finish is rather long. This Rioja is an amazing value at under $20.00

While 2013 was not an ideal vintage, this offering from Murrieta is quite a tasty bottle. Aromas of plums and black cherries, along with subtle hints of cedar. On the palate, flavors of dried red cherries, mixed berries, and pomegranate come into the fold. The wine possesses a nice balance between an elevated acidity and robust structure. The tannins are integrated nicely as well. A fantastic Rioja for under-$20

This is almost as good as the 2010, do you remember how freaking good that was? While it might not be as intense as that wine it has a savory complexity in its youth that the 2010 didn't and more importantly it is more open knit. This wine drinks as if it were at least three years older. It is rich without being heavy, has good length and very polished tannins. There is plenty of ripe cherry fruit, it just accented with chocolate and savory spices.
