Another top notch wine from winemaker Jeremy Weintraub is the 2013 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard, which saw 15% stems and 20 months in new oak. Sporting classic Bien Nacido notes of liquid blackberries, pepper, herbs and marine-like salinity, this full-bodied, fresh and lively effort has good concentration and a tight, slightly closed feel, all suggesting it will benefit from short term cellaring. Give bottles a few years and drink over the following decade. (JD)
Vivid purple. Exotically perfumed scents of dark berry preserves, incense, star anise and woodsmoke, with a hint of olive paste in the background. Fleshy and broad on the palate, offering bitter cherry and boysenberry flavors sharpened by juicy acidity. Rich yet energetic, even lithe, finishing with excellent clarity and supple framing tannins.
