With its combination of late picked fruit and high acidity, Aldo Cifola's "Mirum" is a rare delight. While most of his contemporaries in the Matelica zone produce crisper versions of Verdicchio, Cifola gives his grapes extended hang time prior to harvesting and the result is a richer, weightier and more complex white that pairs well with a wide variety of foods. We drank this wine with heavier pasta dishes and white meats and were pleasantly surprised. Verdicchio at its best.

The 2015 La Monacesca “Mirum” shows lots of ripe pear in the nose but it is on the palate that it differentiates itself from the Verdicchio. Waves of lush richness flow across your palate but seem more like coiled energy—they aren’t fat, they’re vibrant. Skewered by an energetic acidic core, the wine shows incredible depth and vigor. The finish is long; it seems as if minerals are being deposited on your tongue for minutes. Outstanding!

La Monacesca's "Mirum" bottling has long been one of my favorite white wines of our Italian portfolio. I like a wine that challenges me, and brings something new to the table. This is verdicchio, meaning that its lean and stony with crisp acidity, yet the riserva "Mirum" bottling is also harvested a little later than their other wine, and hence has a full bodied, unctuous weight on the palate. It's an intriguing combination, and one that keeps me coming back for another bottle.

With three extra weeks on the vine than the Monacesca, the Mirum has more finness with a soft and elegant nose. White flowers and tropical fruits pop on the nose and compliment the palate's full bodied texture and high acidity. It is still fresh and lively like it's sister wine with just a bit more nuance and minerality on the finish. An absolutely delicious wine that can bridge the gap between chardonnay and sauvignon blanc drinkers.

This refreshing white from Italy's Marches region (on the calf section of the Italian boot) is made entirely from Verdicchio, with its layered bouquet of vanilla, butterscotch and almonds, and vibrant citrus and Golden Delicious apple flavors on the palate, this wine pairs perfectly with seasonal vegetables, poultry and seafood.
