The most expensive Syrah from Matt is the 2015 Syrah Stonessence and there’s a scant 325 cases made. Its deep ruby/plum color is followed by a salty, bloody Syrah that has loads of complexity, full-bodied richness, sweet tannin, and a big finish. Black raspberries, peppery herbs, dry aged beef, and hints of lavender all emerge from the glass and while it’s already singing, it’s going to evolve gracefully for 10-15 years.
The 2015 Syrah Stonessence is the most inky and brooding of these Syrah cuvées from Reynvaan, exhibiting a deep bouquet of elderberry, crème de cassis, tapenade and candied peel. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a lavish attack, satiny tannins and a rich core of distinctly savory fruit. The finish is long and saline. Like all these wines, it's low in acidity but manages to find a mouthwatering freshness of its own. Drink 2018-2018. (WK)
(very little new oak used here): Bright ruby-red. A real butcher shop of a nose, with black raspberry, licorice and black pepper aromas complemented by savory meaty tones. Wonderfully dense, concentrated and sweet on the palate, with glossy, varietally expressive flavors of black fruits, spices and game leading to a very ripe, savory, slowly mounting finish featuring utterly seamless tannins. This pure, creamy, thick Syrah has it all, but I'd still give it another year or three in bottle to gain further in nuance. Matt Reynvaan has crafted a splendid set of Syrahs from the 2015 vintage, somehow managing to keep alcohol levels moderate, in some cases by leaving a little more crop on the vines to slow the ripening. He also credits the density of his vines--1,800 plants per acre in The Rocks and closer to 2,000 in his Foothills vineyard--for reducing direct sunlight on the fruit. (Incidentally, Reynvaan discontinued The Unnamed Syrah In the Rocks Vineyard bottling after 2014.) (ST)
