Tasting Notes

This single-walled vineyard is the top of the line from Fallet-Dart. Although not labeled as a vintage, it is 100% 2004 and composed of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir that is barrel fermented. It is aged for over 12 years on the lees before release. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

    What a special bottle of bubbles! Fallet Dart's Clos Du Mont is complex, layered and great to drink with a wide variety of foods. It spent a ton of time on the lees which gives it beautiful nuttiness, yeasty character and a creamy texture. Baked apple and pear notes are expressed on the nose and palate with underlying minerality and acidic drive. If you are serious about Champagne, you will not want to miss out on this one!

    Ten years - TEN YEARS - on the lees for less than $100? Less than $80, even? Incredible. This is one sophisticated and yet hugely accessible Champagne, with depth, texture, and a honeyed quality that's saved from being too fruity by the 80% Chardonnay and a backbone of acidity. Plus, there's that coveted toastiness. I first met Paul Fallet at our annual Champagne Tent Event in 2017, where he charmed with his shy, sincere personality, and then dazzled us with his high quality wines. Fallet-Dart is a great family-run Direct Import house to support, and even without the backstory, I'd want to drink these delicious, complex Champagnes. Plus, this is fruit from a Clos, based on the 2004 vintage! We always have customers come too late to this party, and only realize how lovely this Champagne is when our limited quantity is gone. Don't let that be you.

    This is still a very special champagne from one of my favorite producers. I still can't believe the quality for just $79.99. It drinks like a fine Puligny-Montrachet only more acidic and with bubbles. This is my celebration champagne, because it's a special bottle but doesn't break the bank. It's also great to drink with whole meal.

    Although this is not labelled as vintage, it 100% 2004 juice. Citrus, almond and pine nut scents are dominant, followed by fragrant oak notes. On the palate, a touch of honey, more toasted nuts, apples and citrus. A great follow up to the previous 1999/2002 blend. Completely different than that one but, in my opinion, more lovable for the added elegance. Fleshing out nicely as it ages, with baked apple fruit peeking out from under the acidity. Wonderful now but, will also age extraordinarily for years to come.

    When I tasted this on my visit to Champagne in March, the first thing I wrote in my notebook was "this is going to be hard to top on this trip". Nothing did top it. This bottle has it all, the concentration of old vines, the unique expression of one of the few walled vineryards of Champagne and the texture that only long ageing on the lees can bring. The wine has a delicate brioche aroma and manages to be creamy in the mouth without loosing any energy or mineral drive. The finish has the rare peacocks tail that I only find in the best of wine- it swells up and fans out on the back end and goes on forever. Any Champagne fan should taste this at least once- most everything of this quality costs more than double.

    What a treat to try this champagne! There are only 5,000 Clos Du Mont bottles produced and not released every year. This bottling is from 2004 and feel it highlights the climate very nicely - ripe fruit with deep concentration. My first impression of this champagne was the brioche and light fruit (think cranberries) on the nose while the finish was bright with a hint of savory, mineral undertones and nice clean finish. This bottle is for the serious champagne drinker wanting to explore a fantastic bottle.

    In my review for the last bottling of the Clos du Mont, I mentioned that it was emailed before I was able to try it. A customer came to ask me questions about the wine and when I read the description Gary had written I fell in love with it before even trying. The last bottle was based on two great vintages, 1999 and 2002, this time is solely 2004. A fantastic vintage that was characterized by the dry winter and spring that brought ripeness and concentration to the grapes. The high amount of chardonnay has kept this wine vibrant, fresh and long on the finish. The barrel fermentation gives the wine it's spice and complexity while the outstanding 13 years on the lees gives nuance and texture you can't imagine. The nose is filled with limestone and each time I try this wine I am blown away by its subtle characters of this unique wine.

    "Clos du Mont" boasts a wonderful history dating back to 740, where fruit of the highest quality is cultivated. The 2004 offering is entirely barrel fermented, and shows tantalizing acidity. Aromas of golden sultana, cream, delicate anisette and white pepper make way to a lush, dry palate with endless complexity. Flavors of dark cocoa powder, marine minerality, and hints of clean, almost sherry like oxidation make this a wine that must be experienced by any Champagne lover who has the chance to do so.
