Although this outgoing and expressive Cabernet exhibits little in the way of subtlety or restraint at the moment and seems at first to put all of its cards face-up on the table with lavish oak and emphatic, fully ripe fruit rushing to the fore in its very generous aromas, it surprises by showing an extra sense of depth and reserve to its deep, far-from-developed flavors. It is solidly built with ample, but wonderfully well-integrated tannins, its focus on classic cassis fruit is unwavering and it is remarkably sustained at the finish. All of its parts add up to a special Cabernet of great potential, and it deserves to be set aside in a quiet corner of the cellar for no fewer than another six to ten years. *Three Stars*
The 2012 Winston Hill Proprietary Red Blend, which is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, is a pretty serious hombre. Dense ruby/purple in color with notes of créme de cassis, graphite and concentrated black cherries, the wine has good acidity, sweet tannin and a full-bodied mouthfeel. The purity and overall personality and character of the wine are impressive. It is a very youthful, relatively unevolved wine with tremendous upside. Give it another several years of bottle-age and drink it over the following 15-20 years. (RP) 94+
A red with tension and backbone plus black currant and spice character. Full body, tight tannins and finesse. Mineral too. Best wine from Frank Family Vineyards.
This wine is made from a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the lot aged almost two years in 75% new French oak. It presents itself as a classic example of the vintage and the valley, robustly bold and approachable in sage and red berry with a sturdy, sizable structure. (VB)
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Winston Hill stands out for its creamy mid-palate and expansive, textured personality. Mocha, new oak, menthol, red cherry and pomegranate notes blossom as this enveloping Cabernet shows off its ample, inviting personality. The Winston Hill is all about texture. (AG)
