Kistler was founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and remains a family owned & operated winery with a focus on Burgundian varietals. Kistler is considered to be one of the pioneers of the buttery, fruit-driven Chardonnays that have come to be closely associated with California. Recent trends have seen a move away from this style, however, and Kistler is beginning to experiment with making more restrained styles of Chardonnay. Winery note: "Thirty year old vines grow dry farmed in deep red volcanic ash, producing a wine with an intense sense of the mountain heritage of the delicate stone fruit that is lifted, like its McCrea cousin, yet firmer, and with a stronger core and added layers of richness."
