It is a bit of a shame that buyers are so obsessed with the 2013 Napa vintage, as there are so many overlooked 2014s that are truly transcendent—the Kapcsandy "Grand Vin" top among them. This is a monumental wine in every sense. Built on a grand scale, yet with unparalleled refinement, it is easy to see why Kapcsandy is so highly regarded among critics and collectors. Everything thing in this wine is perfectly appointed—the fruit, the tannin, the structure, the balance, the energy—you name it, everything is precisely where it should be. This 2014 has a very bright future ahead and will only gain in range, depth, and complexity. Qualitatively, you simply can't do any better than this.

One of my favorite wines on a recent Napa Valley top estates tour. For me, I liked this more than the Roberta’s as I love the power yet in reserve. This is very classy, complete, and balanced. There is power and intensity yet delineation and focus. Lou mentioned Jean-Bernard Delmas and we asked Lou if he was emulating Haut-Brion as there is a similar vein of elegance and precision. With only 900 cases produced, you owe it to yourself to add one of Napa Valley’s finest wines to your collection. Outstanding.

If the Roberta's is the Petrus of Napa, then this is the Haut Brion (a comparison that Lou smiled confidently at when we mentioned it at the estate). Smoky, deep, and compact, it is extremely layered in a way that makes you revel in just the thought of what it will develop into over the years. First-Growth-like, it is lined with dark red fruit, fine dark chocolate, resilient acidity, graphite, and a silky texture that is big, dense, but never heavy. The wines show true to their Napa roots and their Bordeaux inspiration at the same time - that is perfectly clear in the 2014 State Lane Grand Vin. Hold off on this if you can for another five or ten years, and drink over the following thirty.
