K&L Notes

Importer Dan Kravitz sold other people's wines for three decades and decided to take the winemaking plunge in 2007 by purchasing his own vines in the region of Maury, a sub-appellation of Roussillon. Starting with 13.5 acres of Grenache, his holdings have blossomed to 18 acres and now include Syrah and Carignan. All of his vineyards are planted on steep slopes of schist, which translates well to minerality in the wines. The Maury Sec is composed of his oldest Grenache vines on the steepest slopes with the rest made up of Carignan and Syrah.

The wines of Maury have traditionally been sweet and fortified, but didn't have to be. Many expressed the conviction that the stunning region could also produce excellent dry wines, and in 2011 the sub-appellation of Maury Sec was born, to all our benefit I might add. The Serge & Nicolas, named for both the grower and winemaker who nurtured it to bottle, captures the essence of Maury, with soaring plum and cherry blossom aromatics and penetrating flavors of ripe red and black fruits, savory anise, spices and garrigue, framed by beautifully nuanced tannins. What sets these wines apart from so many? The sheer balance and harmony achieved, allowing for early drinking and superb satisfaction.

This is one of the most distinct wines I’ve had from Domaine Cabirau. Normally I associate their wines with the bigger, juicier styles of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre blends found throughout Maury. Yet this wine has utterly captivating floral aromas, bright acidity, and a lifted style. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a very fruit-forward wine, that is modern and polished. But, I love the tangy acidity, the hint of sweetness, and the abundance of strawberry, raspberry, and bing cherry notes. This is hands-down my favorite Cabirau to date.

The beauty of Maury and its vineyards is derived from the shattered rocky brown schist that makes up this other-worldly landscape. When climbing through the vineyards (it's too difficult to just wander), its easy to recognize that though these soils are difficult to farm, the quality of Grenache, Syrah and Caringnan that these vineyards produce can be unparalleled. Importer Dan Kravitz recognized this quality from the beginning when he picked up a dozen or so acres of vineyards and began making his wines from a special plot in Maury. Almost immediately, the critics recognized Dan's endeavors often awarding his wines high marks. Dan's flagship wine is the "Serge & Nicolas" which is his best parcel selection and oldest vines. Showing the depth and richness that wines from these vines can produce, black fruit, anise, violets and peppery spices erupt from the glass. Expressive but still balanced by lingering acidity, Dan continues to produce wines that offer an other-worldly experience.
