Inky purple. Seductively perfumed nose offers ripe but well-focused blackberry and creme de cassis scents, along with smoky vanillin oak, Asian spices, fresh flowers and mocha. Pliant dark fruit flavors possess impressive depth and sweetness, with bracing acidity adding energy. Finishes with gentle grip and a lingering smoky, vanillin quality, leaving an impression of controlled ripeness. This wine is made by Stephan Asseo at L'Aventure. (JR)
The wine itself is dense and dry. Soft in the manner of Paso Robles, it has a deep core of blackberries, coffee and violets, assisted by oak. The tannins are really hard now, and it's difficult to tell where the wine is going. But it's one to watch.
Tightly wound, with a vibrant beam of rich cherry, berry, mineral, sage and spice. Has a long, focused finish, picking up a taut leathery note. Decant. (JL, Web Only-2007)
