Produced by the owner of the famous Rioja estate, Remelluri, this latest cuvée from Telmo Rodriguez reflects his eye for terroir, innovation, and his strong desire to move the great region of Rioja forward. Here we have an unoaked blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano from the village of Lanciego, a wine that is incredibly detailed, expressive, and drinkable -- deceptively simple yet impeccably made.

    This is a truly fresh, special Rioja, with unique vinification! Fermented whole cluster in concrete, never seeing oak, Bodegas Lanzaga "LZ" is bursting forth with juicy fruit notes of bright bing cherry and ripe strawberry, and finishes with an unfettered rocky minerality. An everyday drinker with depth and charm, "LZ" will make any occasion more interesting.

    This Rioja is unique in that it sees no oak aging and is instead fermented and held in concrete vats and stainless steel tanks. It is driven more by the character of fruit rather than oak regime or by manipulation through winemaking. On the nose, aromas of blackberry jam, ripe pluots, and baked cherries play with a bouquet of wet stone, dusty minerality, and floral notes. On the palate, the wine expresses flavors of ripe berries and cherries, but is not overly plush or round. The wine is lean and precise, with a decent of amount of tannins accompanying. Mineral flavors as well on the finish. A delicious and affordable expression of Spanish Tempranillo

    Immediately after opening one of our recently arrived bottles of LZ , I quickly nosed the bottle and was absolutely floored by the aromatics: juicy peaches, macerated red fruits, almost like a berry and peach cobbler before it goes into the oven. There is a delicately candied quality as well, which leads to a palate that delivers on all the freshness and brightness promised on the nose, with a finish that shows a chalky and tannic quality that you might expect from unoaked Tempranillo grown in a prime Rioja Alavesa village. This is the type of Tempranillo driven field blend, fermented with a portion of whole clusters (which are de-stemmed prior to pressing) that I imagine would be similar to the wine made in the region prior to the large scale introduction of small barrels in the mid to late 19th century. Rioja is in the midst of a renaissance, and fortunately for wine lovers, this time around it's not points, toasty new barrels and triple digit pricing, but brightly fruited, humbly priced yet delicious bottles of wine which are leading the way.
