  I really like the 2015 Montefalco Rosso and am happy to recommend this attractive value wine. It shows dark fruit and spice with a supple and round style. There is not too much dimension here, but the wine is upfront and immediate instead. I make roasted chicken according to an old family recipe with roasted garlic and potatoes, and this is exactly the kind of wine I'd want to pair with that dish. (ML)

  This Montefalco Rosso from one of Umbria's finest producers is produced from Sangiovese and a small percentage of Sagrantino and Merlot grapes. Fermentation and maceration occurs over 10-15 days, with a pumping over performed twice a day in order to extract color and aromas from the skins. From the intense ruby red color to the pronounced aromas of ripe red fruit and hint of vanilla, you know this is going to be a big, ample wine. And the taste does not disappoint. A great red for all your summer get-togethers.

  Montefalco Rosso's are often described as less austere and more approachable than the well known Montefalco Sagrantino. This is mostly due to the fact that the Rosso's are only required to have 10-15% of the thick skinned, high tannin and powerful grape, Sagrantino, but has 60-70% Sangiovese and in the case of the Caprai a bit of Merlot. So yes, it is much more approachable with a juicy mid palate, high tannins, ​but is by no means light or non-expressive. A nuanced and spicy nose with deep purple and red fruits compliments the lingering flavors on the palate and the high, long lived acidity that creates a dynamic and lasting finish.

  Caprai's 2015 Rosso really shows the strength of the vintage and is one of his best in years. It's a classic blend Sangiovese, Merlot and Sagrantino that highlights delicious plum and black fruit flavors with a hint of minerals and fine ripe tannins that add to the wine's overall depth and texture. And, it's priced under $20 which makes it not only one of the best deals in our Italian section currently but also a wonderful alternative to its value priced Tuscan contemporaries.

  I really like this wine, yet I’ve not always been a fan of Caprai’s Montefalco Rosso but this 2015 vintage is sensational. This is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot that spends 12 months in barrique, but doesn’t come off as a woody wine at all. The nose is full of complex dark fruits that lead the way followed by subtle underpinnings of porcini, leather and tea. On the palate the richness of 2015 vintage fleshes out the wine’s structure so the tannin becomes very well integrated, excellent balance, long with a great finish. A real bargain,
