K&L Notes

An 88-acre estate, Château de Montfaucon sits just across the Rhône River from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a U.C. Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. Over the years, Château de Montfaucon has developed a HUGE following amongst both our staff and customers. Who is the Baron Louis? A seminal figure in the history of Montfaucon, he was responsible for restoring the château on the estate, saving it from complete ruin at the close of the 19th century.

This is baby Châteauneuf-du-Pape -- love this 2014 for Cote du Rhone and LOVE Montfaucon! A great full bodied red with lots of layers and balance. TWO thumbs up!

Tasting at Montfaucon is always like going home. I've been drinking these wines for over 10 years, since I started my tenure at K&L. When I took over the Rhone buying duties, Montfaucon was one of the first properties I visited. Winemaker Rudi des Pins and his wife Mari, are two of the most welcoming producers you could ever hope to meet. And their wines taste that way as well. Open a bottle of 2014 Baron Louis and you are immediately invited in with its intoxicating nose of potpourri, currants and spices. Those familiar notes of Rhone flavors erupt from the glass and saturate the palate but with purity and elegance. Each vintage offers clarity and introspection, a lot like a trip down memory lane. One thing though, they are definitely a lot cleaner than my old bedroom at my parent's home. Always a treat and quite ageable as well, drink this hearty beauty now or over the next few years and each time you open it, I hope you're reminded of special people and a special place like I am.

This is everything I want in a Rhone blend. It has the juicy red and purple fruits I expect, but they are lifted, bright and fresh. No flabbiness or alcohol notes in sight. The balance of fruit, acid, and structure is perfect and I was really impressed by how integrated this wine tastes. Especially at under $20 this is going to become a staple in my house for fresh, interesting, and delicious red wine.

I love the deep, black color of this wine. Hailing from the older vines on the property, the “Baron Louis” is classic Lirac. Brawny, and powerful with hints of smoke, depth and richness. Fruit on fruit, but with tons of earthy and herbal components to accompany, this is a wine for anyone who loves big Chateauneuf. This is dead-serious Southern Rhone, expressing all the hallmarks of some of the greatest wines in the region. It is absolutely nuts this wine costs $20.
