Tasting Notes

As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine; and for aging, barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines. And what fruit! This crianza is a potpouri of mixed berries, with great purity and cut that provides a lovely contrast to the spiciness and oak nuances. Casa Juan's wines are somehow spicy and very drinkable, yet structured and fresh in a way few classic Riojas are. All estate fruit, hand-harvested and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand-sewn wine with the purity, texture, and elegance to prove it. The Lesmos wines never fail to impress with the quality and concentration they give. Though it may sounds corny, this is still a family run business, and I think you can taste the care and devotion put into this bottling. The Crianza spends the least amount of time in barrel and bottle before it is released, so it is a little fresher and lighter, and less brooding than the Reserva. This will make a fantastic Summer BBQ wine thanks to its medium body, slight spice, and vibrant fruit profile.

Although I’ve concentrated on Rhone and French Regional wines for many years, my first passionate encounters here were with Spanish and Portuguese wines, especially the classic timeless renditions from Rioja brought in by Joe Manekin, our wonderfully savvy and knowledgeable Spanish buyer. Although he recently decided to move on to other challenges, many of his favorite wines remain to remind us of his discerning palate, convivial nature and unflagging eye for quality. To illustrate, the modestly-priced Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza never fails to impress with its sense of balance, incredible freshness and approachability, showcasing savory red fruits, good structure and polished tannins. A great match for festive paellas, grilled lamb skewers, or a hunk of warm bread and a fist-sized chunk of Manchego.

This could be one of the best deals for red wine in the store. Bright and dark fruits backed with spice and earth. Medium bodied with enough structure to stand up to the richest food but not so much that it cannot be enjoyed by itself.
