Tasting Notes

Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging until Angel deems it ready for release. This wine ramps up the intensity of the Crianza, with more pungent fruit as well as a real spicy and wild quality. As with many of the best Riojas, this wine is quite delicious right now if you want to drink some bottles while you wait for other bottles in your cellar to mature.

I always take it upon myself to load up on Señor Lesmos’ incredibly reasonable Reserva Rioja when it gets in. I don’t know where else I can get a 12-year-aged Rioja at such a reasonable price. It has beautiful dark blueberry and blackberry fruit, savory leather and graphite, and elegant underlying oak. It’s complex yet balanced and refined. It’s everything you want for way less than you are used to paying for it. Gracias Señor Lesmos!

As a big fan of the 2005, I was really thrilled to see the 2006 arrive. Surprisingly dominant fruit (for a wine over 10 years old) with secondary notes of spice and a little earth continue to be the key to this wine's delicious showing. Crowd-pleasing and very tempting yet still showing its clear Rioja character. You can sense the care that goes into this, even though the price is very reasonable. Another winner from Casa Juan!

Faithful as ever, this latest release of Señor de Lesmos Reserva is dee-licious: spicy on the nose, it is also more high toned aromatically and on the palate, with fresh and dried red fruits taking the lead. Non fruit notes of sandalwood and subtle wood smoke combine with the fruit on the palate, though at 12 years young this wine shows a bright and vivacious quality which I absolutely love. While it´s not the blockbuster Reserva that they produced in 2001, or the structured, slightly rustic and wild ride of 2005, I quite like this 2006, perhaps the most refined and fresh reserva I have tasted from Casa Juan. Finally, I´ve mentioned it before but it bears repeating here: if it´s value and ageability you´re after, Señor de Lesmos produces my picks for the best value ageworthy red wines in all Spain.

I’ll be right up front I am not a fan of American oak, which is a dominant flavor in most Rioja, but surprisingly nonexistent in this wine even though it is aged in American oak. The nose shows ripe plum, spice and bits of earth but you can tell the flavors are mature this wine’s already over a decade. On the palate it has classic Rioja length while being smooth and supple at the same time, the flavors become more savory, salted plum rather than fresh plum. The finish is long, supple and entertaining, it just seems fun, I really like this wine.

I've consumed more bottles of Lesmos than I can count. It is a key component and early catalyst in my long love affair with Rioja. The 2006 Reserva fits right in! It's a splendid follow up to the wildly popular 2005 and strikes the great balance between beautiful ripe fruit, delicate savory earth tones, and a bright acidity and freshness. Vinified in cement tank, aged wood, and absolutely no stainless steel, Lesmos fit's into the "classic" or "old school" category of Rioja. It's not to be missed!

Beautiful red fruit on the nose, along with black cherries and blackberries. Black pepper and spice as well. On the palate, savory notes, dried cherries, bay leaf, and herbs. Spicy mid-palate, with a dusty minerality and leathery tannins on the finish. A favorite here at K&L year after year; this 2006 offering fails to disappoint. And at a sub-$20 price point? Be sure to stock up on this Rioja when you can!

The customer and staff favorite is back in stock! Fans of the 2005 vintage will go nuts for this one as well. The use of older barrels with a lighter toast means this wine is not inundated with vanilla and spice flavors. It is full of juicy red and purple fruits, with a deeply developed structure. After twelve years in the bottle, I was psyched to see how fresh this wine was. This is an unbeatable price for a Reserva Rioja of this age and I'll be stocking up before this vintage is gone too.
