K&L Notes

Francois Chainier has a long familial background in winemaking, originally hailing from Bordeaux. In 1997, Francois purchased this parcel of Clos du Gaimont which lies in the famed Clos de Nouys, one of Vouvray's most prestigious vineyards. The average age of the vines is 35 years, planted in the chalky-clay soil that makes Vouvray wines so special. The vines are farmed sustainably and the grapes all hand-harvested. The wine spends 18 months aging in primarily used oak barrels in the caves carved deeply beneath the vines. Fresh flavors of green apple, citrus rind, and acacia flowers abound with notes of quince and lemon peel on the palate. It is a wonderful expression suitable for pairing with seafood and poultry dishes.

When I first tasted this wine, I wasn't completely sure what to think of it, but with a reasonable amount of time, I revisited, and it has potential to be heavenly nectar from the gods... for only 16 bucks. The Clos Du Gaimont has fantastic subtle minerality, and perhaps maybe even a little bit of honeydew and mellow acidity on the palate.

Vouvray can easily get quite expensive; this bottle makes for a fantastic stepping stone into the wonderful world of French Chenin Blanc! A pretty nose of honeyed table grape followed by a round, slightly oily, and wonderfully balanced palate, this wine is wildly versatile. It's got just the right amount of acidity to pair with slightly acidic foods without clashing. Or enjoy it by itself! The biggest sacrifice between this and a bottle that costs 3x more is a touch of mineraility... I'll take 3 of these over 1 of those all day.

Delivering all things good in a Vouvray, this 100% Chenin Blanc hits the right notes with beautiful caramelized apple, candied orange peel and the ever present quince paste. Lots of texture, vibrant acidity and a dry finish and you have one of the best values in Vouvray I have tasted in quite some time. I want to drink the heck out of this and if you find a couple bottles in your cellar in a few years, even better.

The Clos du Gaimont Vouvray Sec is a spectacular dry Chenin Blanc. There's a honeyed note to the nose which carries though to the palate that is very inviting. The palate is rounder in texture and carries a little bit of a glycerol quality. There is a bright, zippy acidity running through to keep things fresh. The aromatics are fantastic with notes of white flowers, green apple, ripe green pear and a sweet citrus, reminiscent of tangerine with some pronounced limestone mineral notes. You could drink this now or easily cellar for 10 years. A beautiful wine for simple meals, this would be great with a roast chicken or steamed mussles.
