Aromas of lemon and stone with some slate follow through to a full body and plenty of tropical fruit character such as mango. Flavorful finish. Drink now.
Etna’s best-known whites tend to come from its east-facing slopes around Milo; this wine, however, comes from the drier northeastern slopes, where Alberto Aiello Graci’s terraced plot in the Arcurìa contrada reaches up to 2,100 feet in altitude. His old, alberello-trained vines are able to withstand the dry conditions, and imbue this wine with concentration and depth. The wine ages for one year on the lees in a mix of cement tanks and large oak casks and does not undergo malolactic conversion, accentuating the wine’s vibrant acidity. It feels succulent with white peach, tart lemon and juicy pineapple flavors, though the intense notes of flint and salt give it a stern edge that suggests this will benefit from a few years in the cellar.
Made with 70% Carricante and 30% Catarratto, this elegantly structured wine has enticing aromas of Mediterranean herb, fragrant yellow flower, citrus and a whiff of acacia. The fresh, savory palate shows juicy lime, ripe pear, chopped herb and mineral alongside tangy acidity. The lingering finish closes crisp and clean. (KO) *Top 100 Wines of 2016 #70*
Graci produces some of the finest wines on Etna. The 2015 Etna Bianco Arcurìa (100% Carricante) is a delightful wine that absolutely revives and refreshes the palate with each beautiful sip. It is fragrant and fresh but it also offers a very firm sense of depth. The bouquet opens to salty mineral tones with lighter layers of white peach and tangerine skin. The Arcurìa vineyard, located just opposite the Graci palmento and winery, is planted to ancient vines. (ML) 92+
A graceful, medium-bodied white, enlivened by lively acidity and a streak of spicy mineral that's well-meshed to the pretty flavors of nectarine and lemon pith, showing an aromatic touch of fresh chervil on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2025. 250 cases made. (AN)
100% Carricante. Pale straw yellow. Leesy lemon-fruit nose, with what looks like oak notes. Very linear, almost tart lemon and green-apple fruit on the palate. Tart, crystal-clear finish. 17.5/20 points. (WS)
Pale straw. Butter, banana and custard cream on the rich, showy nose. Then almost surprisingly fresh and crisp in the mouth, but offering a touch of alcoholic heat to go with the ripe tropical fruit and sweet spice flavors. Lovely wine, but you can hardly recognize the Carricante, though the lemony twinge on the long back end does speak of the variety. A blend of 70 percent Carricante and 30 percent Cataratto. (ID)
