Bright deep red. Complex nose melds dark cherry, tobacco, coffee and a hint of exotic fruits, with almost peppery lift. Silky and fine-grained but at the same time penetrating, showing terrific sappy energy to its dark fruit, pepper and tobacco flavors. With its light touch, this reminded me of a Chambolle Amoureuses. Finishes with firm tannins and a sexy hint of game. This can be enjoyed now or cellared. (ST)
Here in its first vintage, the 2005 Barolo Cerretta is another wine that has held up remarkably. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, spices and menthol are all laced together in a powerful, dense Barolo loaded with Serralunga intensity and depth. There is so much to like here, including the wine's immediacy. (AG)
The 2005 Barolo Cerretta is a new Barolo from a rented parcel in Serralunga that was vinified, aged and bottled separately for the first time in 2005. Altare is so profoundly associated with La Morra that it is fascinating to taste his first foray into Serralunga. The 2005 Barolo Cerretta positively covers every inch of the palate in a round, opulent expression of fruit. Still rather fresh and primary, the wine will require some time to come around. Menthol, licorice, minerals and tar inform the long, harmonious finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. (AG)
