This wonderful bargain in Champagne is a blend of 70% Meunier, 25% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir, mostly from the western edge of Champagne. It is aged over three years on the lees. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

This well balanced brut is a spectacular bargain, due to a direct buy, straight from the producer. Not only does this have a fine pearl of spectacular bubbles and a wonderful natural toastiness from long ageing on the lees, it also has the crisp dry finish that I love in an aperitif Champagne. I promise you will be surprised by the quality that this delivers for the price. Get it before the K&L staff buys it all!

This is the newest addition to our grower portfolio, and it has our champagne enthused staff very excited! Named after a famous French fabulist, this meunier dominant blend has bright, concentrated flavors of anjou pear, green apple and spring lilies with well-integrated autolytic notes from 3 years on the lees. Don’t be fooled by the low cost, this is bright, complex and meticulous and will impress even the most discerning champagne drinkers.

This new member of the K&L direct import champagne family is another phenomenal value, providing luxury drinking at an everyday price. For being primarily Pinot Meunier, this wine has a very light, playful zippiness. The nose is full of crisp apple, slight notes of sour candy, and white flowers. Great texture, and a pleasantly dry finish.

Some of my new favorite champagne is definitely the Jean de la Fontaine line from Baron Albert. K & L are the proud 1st importers of Baron Albert on the US market and I hope we see them for years to come! The house is now headed by the Heiresses of the family “The Baron Sisters”. Three sisters that continue to live and work by the family motto; “to join our forces to grow stronger”. Jean de la Fontaine was a 17th century fabulist who is re-known in France and most of the world for his fables and short stories. The champagne “L’Eloquente” made by Baron Albert pays homage to the Fable, La Poule aux oeufs d'or but also to this bubbly’s own eloquence. “Kill not the hen that lays the golden egg” is a good reference here as this a champagne that will satisfy all of your needs, day in, day out and will always come through without hurting your pocket book. The actual champagne is comprised of 70% Meunier, 25% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir. The nose has a crisp and subtle fresh hay-like aroma that is rather refreshing and the palate comes through very nicely with a floral bouquet of hibiscus, golden apple and white peach and tongue-tickling bubbles.

This producer is named after Jean de La Fontaine, writer of animal fables. It is also our newest direct import champagne. I was surprised how light and fresh this was, especially with 70% Pinot Meunier. I got the mineral and citrus characteristics but with earthier undertones on the palate and finish.

I fell in love with this producer the instant I tried L'Éloquente. Fresh and fun, soft and approachable, delicate and deft - it compels you to enjoy it and turns any occasion into a party. The lively acid provides ample lift and structure without being harsh, and the fruit is so friendly you may find yourself reaching for a second bottle without a moment's hesitation. I cannot recommend this highly enough, and I see it overshadowing bubbles in a similar style for twice the price.

From the very Western edge of Champagne, right next to our good friends at Fallet Dart and Baron Fuente, comes the fabled wines of Jean de La Fontaine. This Brut, made from mostly Menieur (my favorite!), has subtle and elegant aromas. It is tart but textural from the three years of contact with the lees. The long, full finish has a touch of chalk giving it that much more subtle complexity.

This tasty bottle consists of 70% Pinot Meunier, 25% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir and provides a fresh and light style of Champagne. The brightness is paired with hints of smoke and red fruit, which is most likely from the Pinot Meunier. With 3 years on the lees, you don't have richness but the notes and texture are structured so nicely. A great deal for a Champagne under $30!

Jean de La Fontaine, our newest direct import Champagne, is neighbors with Fallet Dart in the furthest reaches of the Western region of Vallée de la Marne, known for Pinot Meunier. "L' Eloquente" is Meunier dominant, and shows the varietal's spicier qualities with notes of cloved apple, quince and redcurrant. The palate is clean and dry, densely fruited and is trailed with a distinctly chalky minerality.

The nose on this wine is brilliant, clean and full of white flowers it is inviting, I was hooked from the get go. On the palate I’m always interested first in the balance and this wine’s balance is stunning, (I still can’t believe the price/quality) vibrant, long and remarkably persistent. The flavors pick up a bit of brioche to add to a focused, floral center. Long and complex finish this is a stunningly good bottle of wine for the price.

While my tastes are edging more toward toasty, rich Champagne than they ever have in the past, I'm always pleased to go back to a wine such as this one that has beautiful freshness and a lighter body. The is a creaminess and fantastic length to the mouthfeel, but there are no oak or caramel notes associated with a longer age time. Not only does it sit a long time on the palate after you've swallowed, there is a great breadth to it as well, not something I expected from the light, zippy nose. Overall, great balance and substance and one I will be reaching for again.
