It's not hard to see why the winery would create a wine like this to honor their winemaker who has been with them for decades now. It has everything you could want in a high-end Pinot Noir - great freshness of fruit, a beautifully long acid line, and subtle dusky tannin from the whole cluster addition to bring up the intensity and round out the structure. These are the best of the the best barrels from that vintage and a truly great homage to one of the best winemakers in New Zealand.

A new selection from Fromm, the Cuvee H honors their longtime winemaker and showcases a remarkable pedigree. H is built from the heavier clay soils that make up Marlborough's pinot territory. A barrel selection from vineyards like Clayvin, Fromm, and Quarters Vineyards goes into the blend for H. The results are a fantastic value pinot noir from some of the best parcels in the world. The winemaking is done with 50% stem inclusion to give a beautiful savory balance to all of the high toned fruit that builds the nose and palate.

The Fromm Pinots have become benchmarks in our stores for quality Pinot Noir from New Zealand. Drinking more like a polished Volnay, Fromm's Cuvee H, has beautiful aromas of roasted plum, red flowers and minerals. The palate is extremely supple though, filling the mouth with black cherry, violets and a long evocative finish. This is world class Pinot coming from a region best known for Sauvignon Blanc. Maybe we should rethink what makes Marlborough more famous? Worthy of any great Pinot drinkers cellar.

This is Pinot Noir; the nose is full of spicy, wild cherry, layers of an earthy complexity, coupled with dried flowers and hints of herbs. On the palate you can feel the 50% whole cluster fermentation; it adds a frame and focus to the wine letting its natural balance show. The flavors are wild cherry, violet, and show a hint of sauvage then the earthy, spiciness takes hold leaving a more savory character as the dominant personality. The finish is long, showing great balance and lift and the flavors carry on for some time. I’d want to match this wine with duck breast or wild fowl; it has the complexity but doesn’t have any extra fat to need anything bigger.

It is not often that I taste a new world Pinot Noir with the kind of ethereal, even airy elusiveness that I found in the Cuvee H by Fromm. On the nose it is kaleidoscopic in complexity, with aroma after aroma coming out of the glass. It is deceivingly light on the palate, but very concentrated and long on the finish. This wine certainly has me in its power- and that is usually a feeling that I only get from Volnay. If you are looking for a great bottle of New Zealand Pinot to have with your best wine drinking friends over a good dinner, this is one of the best I have tried.

The 2nd edition of this homage to winemaker Hätsch Kalberer may even outshine the inaugural bottling and will almost certainly out live it. Stunning focus and purity, bright fresh aromas of ripe raspberry, crushed cherry, dry leaf litter, toasted spice, agar wood and clove. Super fine tannins and an energetic acid line. Whilst totally delicious now, this is obviously a young wine that will unwind and continue to improve for the next decade at least. I love this new bottling...top notch, world-class Pinot by any measure.
