You really can not go wrong with this little gem. The Bierzo region is a bit new to me, and I am growing more and more fond of it the more I try them. It has lush red fruit, a hint chocolate, dried thyme and fresh cut floral on the nose. The palate is balanced with nice acidity, soft tannins and a beautiful lingering finish of ripe raspberries dusted with cocoa.

If there is an inexpensive red wine more laden with delicious fruit, savory complexity and layered subtlety, I would appreciate if someone would let me know, because I have to say that Gregory Perez' Brezo is tough to beat. Produced primarily from Mencía, a grape variety that thrives in and around the province of Leon, there are also other grape varieties which add spice, complexity and lovely floral notes in this red blend. What Brezo manages to do here is combine the iron, beefy savory quality of a Castillian red, and temper it with the freshness and immediacy of a Galician one; this the essence of great Bierzo. Yours for under $15.

I have always been a big fan of Mencía wines from Bierzo, and this offering from the producer Brezo furthers affirms that sentiment. Aromas of juicy, ripe berries on the nose, along with a classic bouquet of savory herbs and spices. On the palate, flavors of red berries, dark plum, and pomegranate are complemented by dried thyme and fresh cracked black pepper. The fresh, vibrant acidity and ripeness of fruit make this wine very drinkable on its own, or a perfect complement to everything from burgers, pizza, or grilled meats. A perfect choice to serve at your next dinner party or BBQ cookout!

This a delicious complex and balanced wine. I tasted it before I saw how much it was and thought that it would cost more than it does. The Brezo Mencia is medium bodied and elegant with black pepper notes that do not dominate be are integrated in the wine. It should go well with pork or lamb.

The small region of Bierzo is one of my favorite treasures of Spain. Mencia is at its best here, and produces lovely medium bodied, dark-fruited wines with plenty of savory herbal character. This expression from Brezo is a bit fuller bodied than most, with very bright youthful fruit and complementary sweet oak spice. It still retains its dark berry character, and hints of thyme and sage. Over all and fun and complex little wine!
