The estate’s top Syrah and sourced from a number of top vineyards, the 2009 Rasa Vineyards Syrah Principia Reserve, aged mostly in neutral French oak, is pure and decadently fruited, with brilliant aromas of crème de cassis, smoked blackberry, truffle, sweet oak, and creamy licorice on the nose. These qualities carry over to the palate where the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with a concentrated mid-palate, a rich, full texture, and ripe, polished tannin that frames the finish. Overall, blockbuster stuff that is already complex and approachable. Nevertheless, it should ideally be given 2-3 years of bottle age, and then consumed over the following decade or longer.
(100% syrah; 15.2% alcohol; three-quarters of the lots were fermented with native yeasts): Deep red-ruby. High-pitched, expressive aromas of red cherry, raspberry and black licorice. Smooth, suave and rich on the palate, with highly perfumed notes of exotic flowers and spices. Extremely backward today but boasts outstanding mid-palate energy and lift. Finishes very long, with a piquant note of licorice. This needs a minimum of four or five years of cellaring. (ST) 93+
Firm and muscular, this has a supple core of blue and purple fruits, plus balancing acids, ripe tannins and no overt oak influence. It's long and seamless. (PG)
Dark and brooding, balanced with tart acidity, offering dense plum, currant and licorice flavors that linger on the focused finish. Needs cellaring to bring the elements together. Best from 2014 through 2019. (HS)
