Tasting Notes

Monica Larner writes: "One of the oldest estates in the Langhe, Fratelli Barale was founded in 1870, shortly after the Barolo denomination was created with the help of Marchesi Falletti and founding father of modern Italy, Count of Cavour, Camillo Benso. Sergio Barale and his daughters manage the estate today."

It's always a special occasion when this wine arrives at the store. It is just so good and it's never around long enough so customers (and staff) race to get their hands on some. Bursting with pure cherry fruit, herbs and tantalizing acidity, this is a joy to drink with a wide range of foods.

I love this Langhe! It is an absolute steal for the price, and probably my favorite lighter-style Nebbiolo in the store right now. Grown organically on calcareous soils facing East for maximum daytime sun exposure. The result is a perfectly ripe Langhe with a powerfully perfumed nose, a graceful body full of red fruit, and earthy tobacco on the finish. The wine sees 12 months in large format european oak, but has fresher qualities more reminiscent of stainless steel Nebbiolo. A classic expression of the region in just about every way, and perfect as company to pizza, bolognese, or creamy risotto. Friendly and approachable now, but will keep for several more years.
