The 2008 Alfred Gratien 'Cuvée Paradis' Brut has opened up beautifully over the course of the year that has elapsed since I last had the pleasure to drink this wine and it is now really nicely into its plateau of peak maturity. The bouquet is deep, pure and focused, offering up a complex constellation of apple, a touch of white peach, chalky soil tones, incipient crème patissière, delicate floral tones and a whisper of vanillin oak from the portion of the vins clairs that were raised in cask. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with a fine core, lovely soil signature, elegant mousse and a long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. This is a very high class bottle of bubbly that is drinking with style and grace, but has decades of life still ahead of it.
Based around a blend of grand cru wines and with seven years aging, this wine combines a rich texture with tight acidity and hints of toast from the wood fermentation. A creamy background gives the mature fruits their chance to show beautifully. The wine is ready to drink although it will age at least until 2025. *Cellar Selection* (RV)
A mouthwatering Champagne, with a lovely, creamy mousse caressing the palate, this offers expressive accents of toasted coconut, spun honey and mineral, layered with crushed black currant and lemon parfait flavors. Long and lasting, with the flavor range expanding on the finish. (AN)
Produced from fruit grown in premier and grand cru villages, this is predominantly Chardonnay (65 percent), the balance Pinot Noir. The wine has a fleshy fruit character without being sweet, its tart acidity carrying notes of tangerine and peach. Fragrant and taut up front, this broadens out into a full, oaky finish, needing bottle age to meld and develop complexity.
The 2008 Cuvée Paradis Brut (L15351, disgorged in 12/2015 with eight grams per liter of dosage) blends 65% Chardonnay with 35% Pinot Noir and offers a deep and intense bouquet of ripe lemon flavors. Very pure and mineral on the palate this is a powerful, but straight, complex and finesse-full Millésime with a long and tension-filled finish. This has great expression and excellent quality, though is still very young. (SR) 90+
Gratien's 2008 Brut Cuvée Paradis is a very pretty and also accessible wine for the vintage. White orchard fruit, flowers, smoke and slate flesh out in an effortless, creamy Champagne that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. This is an especially ample, creamy style for the year, yet all the elements are nicely balanced throughout. (AG)
