Quite unfortunately, we can't keep this wine in stock as consistently as we'd like, since the supply is rather limited. However, whenever we have it, I'm always blown away by its complexity, depth and unexpectedness. When you see the word 'savage' you may worry that this is some odd "funky" wine, but it's quite the opposite. It's open, floral and crisp with excellent lees-based texture and slight nutty notes that give way to clean honeydew melon. Easily one of my favorite whites to drink all on its own, enjoying each layer of flavor.

Another impeccable wine from Duncan Savage. It’s so easy to spend $30-50 on a bottle of wine and get something that’s just ok. Even worse is getting something that’s downright boring. I’d almost rather have something wacky or hard to drink than absolutely soulless. This wine is neither of these. It’s full of soul and life, but also extremely polished and well put together. A graceful nose of orange sherbet, tangerine peel and wild herbal quality. The mouth feel is down right lip smacking with some serious texture and a juicy tropical acidity that cuts right through the bold lemony fruit. I see connections with some of the great wines of the Loire, Rhone and Burgundy, but I think even California Chard drinkers (while not at all in the same flavor profile) could find way to appreciate the opulent qualities of this exceptional South African. An absolute treat which we’re lucky to offer at such a stupendous price.

This is one of the most compelling and delicious white wines I’ve ever tried from South Africa. The blend of four varietals creates such a unique wine where each gets its chance to shine yet they fall beautifully in line to create something new. Initially it reminded me of a quality white Bordeaux but with time it was obvious it stood as its own unique wine; perhaps like the famed Remelluri Rioja Blanco. It has intense aromatics of citrus, herbs, and white flowers followed by stone fruits (peaches!), almond notes, and baking spices. The wine closes with a long savory finish which leaves you craving the next sip. Bravo!

A serious white wine, I love the Savage for its combination of its fruit, textural weight and acid propelled structure. Rich yellow fruits on the nose also show a very subtle SB smoked capsicum quality. Flavors are both rich and racy, with pink grapefruit, yellow plums and star fruit on the mid palate, and a very long finish that sort of reminds me of a top quality Spanish Godello. Interesting, top quality white from the Western Cape!

A fantastic, unexpected blend from South Africa, encompassing 44% Sauv Blanc, 36% Semillon, 11% Clairette Blanche, and 9% Chenin Blanc,. This wine is incredibly fresh and lively with bright acidity and great length. The old, large format French oak used helps round out the sharp edges and the minimal cellar intervention lets each varietal shine. From a mix of altitude and maritime vineyards, this wine shows great complexity and evolving notes. A winner from one of the nicest and most talented winemakers coming out of South Africa.

This is a wondrous white wine. Sitting somewhere between a Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc and Vouvray, it has a profile that engages the nose and delights the palate. Since it is made of such disparate grape varieties, like Chenin Blanc and Clairette, a muddled quality can often occur but the Savage is a wine greater than the sum of its parts. Aromas of white peaches, quince and papaya are intermixed with a leesy hazelnut tone. The wine has full-bodied texture and simmering acidity that keep it bright and deft on the palate. The only drag to this wine is that I didn't discover it myself. Kudos to Stefanie Juelsgaard, our new South African wine buyer, for finding this wine. It's now one of my new favorites of the year.
