K&L Notes

Provencal rosé? Who needs it when you have Puglia! Leone de Castris was the first producer to bottle rosé in Italy, in 1943—interestingly enough it was for the US Army! The de Castris family’s Five Roses is exceedingly well balanced and although it looks a little darker, it is an easy-drinking and expressive rosé with richness yet has excellent acidity for a perfectly balance summer sipper.

The very first rosé to be bottled and sold in Italy, the Leone de Castris Five Roses Rosato is Italian to its core. With a blend of 90 percent Negroamaro and 10 percent Black Malvasia, the wine shows great depth and intensity, with a weighty, full mouthfeel, and playful aromas and flavors of Bing cherry, rhubarb and summer strawberry. Juicy and fresh, this rosé manages to be simultaneously opulent and jaunty, with an energetic and effusively mineral palate.

This is super easy to drink so buy 2 bottles as the first will be empty before you know it. Bright red fruits along with berry and plum skin fill the expansive middle and leave a full palate impression. The finish is snappy and fresh but not at all austere and finishes with mouth watering minerality.

The "Five Roses" comes to us from one of the best producers in Italy's well known Salento region (Puglia).Although Leone di Castris is best known for their impressive Salice Salentino Riserva, their rose shines as well. This tasty and flavorful Summer delight highlights delicious cherry flavors that cross the palate in a medium-bodied and somewhat textured quaff with mild acidity and lingering fruit on the finish. It's a bit broader and fruitier than the typical Provencal versions and is great on its own or with lighter fare.

While you are sipping on your French roses these warm months, don't forget that the Italian rosato should be your new summer fling. The five roses has a beautiful, full nose filled with berries and a hint of bubblegum. It is sweet and a bit tangy on the palate, like a freshly picked white cherry. It has high acidity, medium body and is completely dry. The juicy fruit and fresh acidity make it mouthwatering through the long finish.
