A Grenache dominated cuvee blended with 20% Syrah and 5% Carignan, the 2016 Languedoc Rouge sports a deep ruby color to go with juicy, fruit-forward notes of berry fruits, cracked pepper, leafy herbs and wild flowers. Juicy, forward, sexy and supple, with lots of sweet fruit, it stays elegant and silky on the palate, with medium-bodied richness and nicely integrated acidity. It’s a terrific value and will keep for 4-5 years.
Slightly more subdued than the exuberant 2017, the 2016 Les Darons is nevertheless a ripe, satisfying mouthful of red wine. Cherries and plums pick up an appealingly savory, leathery edge in this wine, which never sees any oak during its élevage. Drink it over the next few years. (JC)
A fresh, peppery red blended from grenache with a little syrah and carignan, this is light and brisk, with hints of tobacco leaf and dusty earth to keep its cherry fruit rooted firmly in southern France.
