K&L Notes

Winemaker's notes: "These grapes come from Camp 4 Vineyard in eastern Santa Ynez. It's a warm climate site, perfect for this variety. These grapes were whole cluster pressed and then fermented and aged sur lies in older French oak barrels for about 18 months prior to bottling in April, 2016. The year its seen in bottle has helped it developed additional richness and complexity. This is a beautiful red wine drinker's white wine - and one that we enjoy serving at cellar temperature, not overly chilled. Enjoy it now - and lay a few bottles down for a decade or more to see how it ages gracefully."

A complex and layered white that really shows off winemaker Larry Schaffer's skills with Rhone varietals. This was one highlight of a brilliant lineup from him tasted recently. Fruit for this bottling is picked from Camp 4 Vineyard in the Los Olivos District of Santa Ynez Valley. The vineyard site is famed for producing world class Rhone varietal wines. It was first planted by Fess Parker, and is now owned by the the Chumash Native Americans. This Tercero bottling is packed with crushed apple, almond paste, chamomile, and honey lemon tea. The palate is rich but quite savory and dry with good phenolic structure and depth. Where so many Rhone whites turn oily and lose definition, this wine keeps driving and remains focused into the long complex finish. A lovely rendition of the varietal from a producer to watch closely.

While Marsanne isn't typically the white varietal that comes to mind for California wine-making, yet this Rhône white stands out from the crowd. Aromas of buttered apple crisp, toast, macadamia nuts, and honey comb. The palate exudes a pleasant level of ripeness without being overly fruity. Dried apple notes move towards a minerally finish. This is a lovely and under-priced white from the Central Coast that will surprise and please many

It's not everyday one can taste a domestic Marsanne with finesse like this. Camp 4 Vineyard, prized by many well known wineries, is located in Eastern Santa Ynez Valley, where fruit reaches full ripeness and maturity in sandy, loamy soils. One glance at this wine in the glass, and you know you're in for something different. Behold the saturated, golden hue and inhale the leesy, nutty nose...clean, but bordering on cidery, with a hint of caramel. The palate is full bodied, and though this wine spends 18 months in French oak, the natural richness and character of Marsanne dominates. Notes of bright lemon peel and a pop of freshly cut, wild California fennel freshen things up, buoyed by lively acidity.
