Intense aromas of blackberry and black truffle follow through to a full body, firm and silky tannins and a gorgeous finish. Plenty of dried cherry to close. A pretty and focused red that needs two or three years to soften.
Castello Banfi has done a great job in a classic vintage. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura is an impressive effort with high-quality fruit that rises to the top. The bouquet offers polished lines and linear tones of black cherry, dried blackberry, spice, tobacco and grilled herb. In appearance, the wine is saturated and rich. The finish offers a bright pop of acidity that will serve the wine well as it faces its future evolution. (ML)
Deep red. Violet, sour red cherry and flint on the lively nose. Then flavors of savory herbs, ripe red cherry and underbrush are nicely lifted and extended on the long finish by bright, harmonious acidity. Lovely Brunello that, unlike many other past vintages of Poggio alle Mura Brunellos marked by dark fruit aromas and flavors, echoes with fresh red fruit reminders. For my money, there is simply no comparison between this beauty and some of the inky, very savory, herbal Poggio alle Mura wines of the past. This is a smashingly good Brunello. (ID)
Aromas of ripe plum, blue flower and a whiff of baking spice unfold in the glass. The vibrant elegant palate offers dried Marasca cherry, cranberry, star anise and a hint of toast while fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide support. Drink 2021-2028. (KO)
This is from Banfi's vineyards around the Poggio alle Mura castle, planted in 1992 following extensive clonal selection on the property. It is aged for two years in predominantly French barriques, with a small portion in Slavonian oak casks. The nose slowly reveals chai tea, plum, black raspberry and sweet tobacco aromas, with cedary, vanilla notes joining in on the palate. Supple, integrated tannins suggest mid-term cellaring potential. Notes of basil and celery seed accent this wine’s just-ripe dark-cherry flavors, creating a playful tension with the lively acidity. Two years in French oak barriques lent the wine notes of espresso and chunky tannins that need a few hours to soften in a decanter before serving with game off a wood-fired grill.
A compact, chunky red, with dense tannins shoring up plum, cherry, earth, underbrush and tobacco flavors. Big and beefy, featuring a wave of stiff tannins on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2035. (BS)
